The farm was in regular operation raising primarily livestock until about 2018.
Much of the old infrastructure had fallen into disrepair, but we're working to rebuild the foundations for more meaningful farming in the coming years.
We believe the barn was erected pre-1940s, and was built in two phases. There is a distinct dividing line between the older section and newer. We've worked to stabilize the barn, and it's functional for storing hay and equipment.
Big Red made her way into the family back in the 90's and has been kicking around ever since. We've turned Harvest Lane into her retirement home, letting her bump around the marsh and fields in her old age.
Our loyal mouser tabby, Ginny joined the family in 2022, and immediately started leaving us presents by the front door. She keeps the mice out of the garbage and away from the equipment cables.
We have been partnering with Dunham Farm Services since 2022 to range sheep here on the farm. Over the course of the year, we welcome more than 50 sheep, helping tame about 15 acres of grass, and providing welcome nutrients to the soil.
Quite literally everyone we know has chickens and is trying to give away eggs all the time. So what's the first thing we should do? Well, build a coop and raise some chickens, of course! Stop by and meet the crew!
13 acres of former tidelands created with the building of several dikes in the early 20th century. Some parts dry year round, some part mucky in mid-August. A haven for deer, coyote, mice, eagles, hawks, rabbits, ducks, geese, and who knows what else. And the primary feeding grounds for cows (previously) and sheep (currently).
Findlay the farm dog recently moved on to the big farm in the sky. There is a dogwood tree dedicated to his memory.
Believed to have been planted in the 30's or earlier by the predecessor to Harvey and Esther Gabelein, this ancient orchard provide a bounty of apple, cherry, plum and hazelnut throughout the summer and fall.
Our compact workhorse. Definitely too small for a major farm operation, but oh so fun and helpful.
Inspiring, if nothing else. And the reason we're here. Feeding the chickens, picking the apples before they're ripe, and fertilizing the grounds with their "bush potty", this group's smiles keep the ship running.
